Troubleshooting when your fridge is not cooling properly

Refrigerator is not Cooling

How do I fix my refrigerator when it is not cooling?

What to do if your refrigerator is not cooling? Consider our handy tips to provide first aid to your refrigerator.

What to check

Pay your attention on the below described parts. If any of the parts is defective, Care&Repair will provide you with the certified required part wherever you live in Toronto. We deal with certified parts for any appliance of Maytag, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Bosch, LG, Samsung, etc.

Condenser Coils are Dirty

Dirty condenser coils is one of the most common causes of the problem. The coils are typically located on the back or bottom side of the refrigerator. Their function is to dissipate the warm temperature accumulated in the fridge. If the condenser coils are clogged with debris, hair and dust, the refrigerator is forced to work much harder to cool down. Thus, it won’t be able to keep the stable temperature and won’t be cooling. Clean the coils with the help of the toothbrush, sponge and natural cleanser.

Condenser Fan Motor

Due to the condenser fan motor the refrigerator enables to cool down in a proper way. You can easily correct the work of the fan motor, having cleaned it from debris and other possible obstructions. Carefully check the fan blades whether they are not lodged. Then slightly turn them by hand. If the blades are turning freely, check the condenser fan motor for its continuity. If there is no continuity or the blades are not spinning, you are to replace the fan motor.

Evaporator Fan Motor

If the evaporator fan motor is defective, it will fail to circulate the cold air to the freezer compartment. To find out whether the evaporator is faulty, you can try to turn its blades by hand. It has to turn freely. Also check the evaporator fan motor for its continuity using the multimeter. Replace it, in case the motor doesn’t have the continuity. The noisy work of the evaporator proves that fact that the motor is defective and has to be discarded.

Start Relay

The compressor can stop running because of the improper work of the start relay. Therefore, the fridge won’t be cooling. Check the start relay for its continuity between the run and the start terminal sockets. You should replace the start relay, if there is no continuity. If the burning smell is coming out from the start relay, you should replace it in this case as well.

Temperature Control Thermostat

The aim of the temperature control thermostat is to transmit power to the evaporator fan motor, condenser fan motor and the compressor. If the temperature control thermostat is faulty, the running of the refrigerator can be disrupted. You can easily determine whether the thermostat is malfunctioning having turned it from the lowest setting to the highest one. If there is a click sound while turning it, the thermostat is not defective. If it doesn’t click, you should check the thermostat for its continuity using the multimeter. In case the thermostat doesn’t have any continuity, replace it.

Temperature Control Thermostat

Start Capacitor

The start capacitor stimulates the start of the compressor. Consequently, if the start capacitor is faulty, the compressor won’t be able to start, and as a result, the refrigerator won’t be cooling. Check the continuity of the start capacitor using the multimeter. Replace this part if it appears to be defective.

Thermistor

The thermistor’s task is to control the temperature and to send its readings to the control board. On the base of those temperature readings the control board regulates the power to the compressor and the evaporator fan. If the thermistor fails to function properly, the refrigerator won’t cool. Test the thermistor’s continuity with a multimeter. You have to replace it if there is no continuity.

Temperature Control Board

The temperature control board transmits power to the fan motor and the compressor. Therefore, if the control board is faulty, the cooling system won’t function properly. It is pretty difficult to determine the problem, that’s why you should inspect each component of the board for its continuity. If all arts are not faulty, but the control board is still not working, replace it.

Ice Level Control Board

Compressor

The compressor circulates the refrigerant through the evaporator and the condenser coils. The refrigerator won’t cool, if the compressor is malfunctioning. Test the continuity between the electrical pins located on the side of the compressor. The compressor is faulty if there is an open circuit. Replace it.

Main Control Board

The most uncommon cause of why the refrigerator is not cooling is the main control board. Inspect the continuity of all its parts using the multimeter. In case none of its components is defective, you are likely to replace the entire main control board.
