Troubleshooting when freezer is cold and fridge is warm

How do I fix my refrigerator when it is not cooling?

Our guide leads you to successful repair of any home fridge.

The Evaporator Coils are Frosted Over

Evaporator coils of any refrigerator turn on to melt down the accumulated frost in it, a few times every day. If by any reason this defrosting and melting system gets defective, it will not only accumulate frost in coils but will also restrict the airflow which won’t allow a fridge to cool. Check those coils and defrost system, if they are working fine. Otherwise, use a pin on a fridge to start over a defrost timer. Also, make sure that a door gasket is tight and clean while a door is closed.

Evaporator Fan Motor

Cold air is drawn and circulated inside the freezer by the evaporator fan motor. In case, this fan doesn’t work properly, the fridge will not get cold. Check it by a multimeter test if windings are in continuity. If they aren’t, you need to replace the motor. Also, consider signs like motor making any unusual noise or blades are not moving freely.

Damper Control Assembly

It controls and regulates cold air into the fridge by opening and closing it. Check if the damper control system is working properly. In case, it is stuck or broken, enough amount of air won’t pass into the refrigerator compartment, so consider replacing it. One more advice is to vacuum the pipes. The more dust is in there, the more often all the parts turn ON/OFF the appliance; this causes a quick worn of the cooling system overall.

Thermistor

It is a monitoring system of a refrigerator which records temperature readings and subsequently notifies the control board which accordingly regulates the power to compressor, fan, evaporator coils and other necessary parts. If thermistor is broken, it will send wrong readings and compressor, fan, etc. won’t work as they should be. Check the continuity and resistance of thermistor by a multimeter. If it has any issue, replace it.

Temperature Control Board

Being the main system of a refrigerator, it regulates the power supply to other components like fan motor, compressor. Determine if it is sending voltage to fan motor and compressor. If not, it’s faulty. Look for any defect and check all other components before replacing it because they are often misdiagnosed. We recommend cleaning of the board also as it helps to erase micro dust and dirt.

Defrost Control Board

If this control board is broken, the evaporator coils won’t defrost on time and end up getting clogged by frost. This will also result in creating more heat to remove the accumulated frost. Look if the defrost heater and thermostat are working fine or not. If not, consider replacing the board. Often, an appliance repairman has to reset triggers which are inside of the board. Try this approach too.

Defrost Timer

It is turned on several times every day for melting the frost. If it is broken, the defrost cycle won’t be turned on. This will accumulate more frost and create even more heat energy to melt it down leading to increased temperature in a fridge. Check it manually by switching on the defrost cycle, if it doesn’t work in 30 minutes, get it replaced. As a matter of fact, a spring of the switch could be replaced for better performance.

Defrost Thermostat

Temperature of evaporator coils is monitored by a thermostat. It closes thermostat contacts when there is a drop in coils temperature below a certain level. A malfunctioning thermostat will not close thermostat contacts and will not provide the needed power to a defrost heater. Using a multimeter, test for continuity and if doesn’t show continuity at a lower temperature, replace it. Sometimes, a technician rolls foil over a bi-metal part to increase a productivity level.

Main Control Board

If there is any defect in the main control board then it needs to be replaced.  Before you consider replacing it, check other connected components for defects. If all of them are working fine, there’s no option than replacing the main control board. The last thing you may perform is to clean up metal contacts of the board so that the connection with cords becomes better.
